As part of a mandate, AHEAD OF TIME — together with a team of digital-marketing specialists from the grow Group (partners MSO digital and 2do digital) — analyzed the social-media activities and performance as well as the setup and execution of the Google, Bing and META online advertising of the Verkehrs-Club der Schweiz (VCS) — a classic marketing audit from an outside perspective.

A performance audit for a mission we care about

VCS's mission — "sustainable mobility and a healthy climate" — is close to our hearts. We took on this assignment with matching motivation.

When an NGO needs performance marketing from an outside perspective

The project goal: examine VCS's existing digital-marketing performance from an outside perspective, identify optimization opportunities and derive recommendations for short- and mid-term improvements in social media and online advertising.

The VCS marketing team works with commitment and lean resources — as is typical for many NGOs. In that context, external analysis, honest feedback and concrete action tasks are more valuable than large strategy documents — a lean strategy audit instead of a paper pile. That is exactly where we focused.

In-depth analysis with concrete actionable recommendations

We reviewed the entire Google Ads setup in detail — account settings, campaign structure, ad groups, keywords and YouTube. Concrete findings included:

  • Rework geotargeting — French-language ads were running in German-speaking Switzerland and vice versa
  • Review auto-applied recommendations — some active recommendations can cause keywords to be deleted from the account automatically
  • Match bid strategies to conversion volume — some campaigns generate too few conversions for the chosen strategy
  • Sharpen ad headlines — replace generic headlines such as "Learn more" with keyword-supporting content
  • Set up a brand-negative list — competitors such as ADAC are appearing within the VCS brand search; impression share has room to grow
  • Clarify YouTube campaign objectives (views/clicks/leads?) and reinforce the ad message with sound

Meta Ads screening

A detailed review of account settings, tracking, campaign structure, targeting and creatives. Clean tracking is the foundation of any honest performance assessment — without robust attribution models, every optimization remains gut feeling. Key findings:

  • Conversions API Gateway is enabled but not yet linked — events are not tracked server-side. Recommendation: finalize the setup via CAPI Gateway for clean deduplication
  • Expand tracking — add "Purchase" (completed checkout) and "CompleteRegistration" (newsletter signup) events
  • Set up always-on campaigns for ongoing communication — continuous data feed for the algorithm
  • Conversion campaigns for memberships and donations — not used so far
  • Expand creative diversification — different motifs, color schemes, textual building blocks; test more ad formats
  • Configure a backup payment method and correct beneficiary/payer settings

Social-media analysis with TCS benchmark

Comparison of social-media performance VCS ↔ TCS:

VCSTCS
sinceDec 2016Jan 2014
followers1,51810,100
members~100,000~1.6 mio
posts694992
follower ratio1.52 %0.63 %

Insight: Even though the TCS account is almost 3 years older, VCS has already reached 70 % of the post volume. Relative to membership, 1.52 % of VCS members follow the channel — for TCS it is only 0.63 %. VCS's engagement rate is disproportionately strong.

Recommendations for follower growth:

  • Broaden the target audience and address younger people
  • Tighten the graphic execution
  • Fill content with memes and videos
  • Boost posts that are relevant beyond the existing followership

Brand consistency and visual recommendations

Detailed recommendations for unifying the visual appearance on social media:

  • Typography — keep positioning, framing, typeface and language order consistent
  • Disruptor placement — fix size and position
  • Color scheme — align typography across formats; language code (white on light green = FR, white on dark green = DE)
  • Blog posts, webinar visuals and regular posts with clear templates for cut-out portraits, transparent color blocks and consistent icons

Topic suggestions and community management

  • Use website topics on social media
  • Address sustainability as a theme
  • Content that speaks to younger users (e.g. portraits)
  • Topical content such as holiday-season traffic jams
  • User-generated content (share what followers do)
  • Professionalize community management: liking/replying to comments, CTAs (ask questions, invite comments), quizzes, polls
  • Crisis-management guidelines for negative comments — factual, on-topic, witty, concise

What the analysis achieved for VCS

Clear, actionable tasks per channel

For each area (Google Ads, Meta Ads, social media) a prioritized list of action tasks with concrete technical and editorial steps — directly actionable short-term or strategically embedded mid-term.

Outside perspective as a diagnostic tool

External eyes often see what internal teams miss in day-to-day operations. The outside perspective was a valuable addition for the VCS team — and confirmed what is already working well (e.g. the above-average follower ratio). Many of the performance levers for SMEs we identified apply well beyond VCS.

A strategic roadmap, not just optimizations

Alongside tactical improvements (tracking, targeting, brand-negative lists), a mid-term roadmap was sketched out — from conversion campaigns through creative diversification to visual unification.

Strong value for money on an NGO budget

The collaboration stood out not only for professional expertise and sound analytical capabilities, but also for a strong price-performance ratio. Manageable costs, efficient teamwork and a concrete output that enables VCS to drive both short-term improvements and long-term strategic development.
